Have you ever wondered why you can see fewer and fewer stars in the night sky? The reason is light pollution.
It is caused by strong artificial lighting and it damages the entire ecosystem in the long term.

So-called "dark-sky friendly" lighting solutions help to reduce the negative effects of light. Find out in this newsletter how this can be easily implemented.

Outdoor lighting for a safer night

How can light pollution be reduced when we need light to keep our cities and communities safe at night? Stephanie Schaffgotsch and Eduardo Pereira from Tridonic product management team were happy to answer our questions.

Why is light pollution suddenly an issue?

Eduardo: Safety is the top priority in public spaces. Good illumination is central to this. Modern LED luminaires are cost-effective and save a lot of energy compared to older types of luminaires in continuous operation. Unfortunately, this energy efficiency has also led to more luminaires being installed and the lights usually remaining switched on all night – regardless of whether they are needed or not. This is why light pollution has increased significantly in recent years. The result: a real, dark night hardly exists any more.

How do we keep our cities and communities safe if we reduce the amount of light?

Stephanie: Lights that are on all night do not equal more safety. If there are people in the area, of course there needs to be good lighting. However, the situation is completely different if there is no one in a public square, on a street or in a park. Then there is literally no one there for whom the light can provide orientation and safety.

Environmentally friendly outdoor lighting which means it only provides light when it benefits someone. DarkSky International also recommends dimming the lighting at night and using warmer light colours with a lower blue component.

Tridonic took these recommendations into account when developing the new multi-channel system. The aim is to create outdoor lighting that maintains safety and possibly even improves it further thanks to targeted lighting in certain areas. At the same time, we want the night to become darker again - and thus reduce the negative impact of light on the ecosystem.

New multi-channel technology for adaptive outdoor lighting

Lighting that is "dark-sky friendly" – what does that actually mean? The aim is to reduce light pollution through the use of demand-dependent lighting and the use of warm white colour temperatures and dimmed light. With Tridonics new multi-channel solution, you can do just that.

The combination of a dual-channel driver with a Tunable White LED module and dynamic lighting control enables completely demand-dependent lighting. Any colour temperature in the range from 2,200 Kelvin to 4,000 Kelvin can be controlled. The warmer the light, the less impact it has on the environment.

Different lighting control solutions make it possible to illuminate individual luminaires or entire cities in a dark-sky friendly way. Control individual luminaires by programming the driver over time (chronoSTEP+) or by using sensors (sensorMODE). Larger groups of luminaires can be switched as required using basicDIM Wireless.

Together, we'll let the stars shine again in all their splendour!

Did you know?

What is "zone lighting"?

When the light cone of a luminaire is divided into different zones, this is referred to as "zone lighting". With the help of Tridonics new dual-channel driver, the light cone can be divided into two zones. The dimming range of the lighting can be set separately for each zone. For example, the pavement and the traffic lane of a road can be illuminated separately - and pedestrians can benefit from good illumination of the pavement at night, while the traffic lane is only dimmed.

What do we mean by "Guide the night" and what is the G-index? Stephanie Schaffgotsch and Eduardo Pereira will explain the answers to these questions and how you can implement "dark-sky friendly" outdoor lighting in an exclusive webinar on 16 October 2024. Make a note of the date or – even better – register for the webinar now.
